Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy (Regenerative Injection Therapy), also known as ligament reconstructive therapy, is a recognized orthopedic procedure that stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to strengthen joints weakened by trauma or arthritis.

A precise injection of a mild irritating solution (dextrose, sterile water, and local anaesthetic mixture) is placed directly into the site of the torn or stretched tendon or ligament. This produces a mild, controlled inflammation that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Fibroblasts (“baby” ligament and connective tissue cells) are stimulated to lay down new tissue on the weakened area. This encourages growth of new ligament or tendon fibers, resulting in a tightening of the weakened structure.

This process causes a decrease in painful signals arising from the many nerves in the lax ligaments, and ultimately a decrease in pain.
